Mass wedding, Hearts Day culminate Kaganapan 2011

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The “Kasalang Balen” or mass nuptial of some 100 couples and a night of Valentine music and love songs on Monday concluded the three-week celebration of Kaganapan 2011.
As in the past cityhood charter anniversary celebrations, the mass wedding came free and complete from registration to reception at Heroes Park, coinciding with Valentine’s Day.
The mass wedding was officiated by Mayor Oscar Rodriguez and witnessed by Vice Mayor Edwin Santiago and Councilors Alex Patio, Jimmy Lazatin and Ruping Dumlao.
Rodriguez, while welcoming the couples into what he called “the shackled club” and tying the knot for them, emphasized the importance of matrimony in raising a family and going for a decent life.
“This is very important for us in the city. We sponsor this not for anything else but for you to start a good family and have a decent life,” he told the couples.
The oldest couple of the night, Noel and Herminia Basilio, led other newlyweds in thanking the City Government for the mass wedding.
“Kung hindi po dahil sa libreng kasalang ito ay hindi matutupad ang aming pangarap. Maraming salamat po (The free wedding made our dream come true. Thank you very much),” said the couple who have reared seven children and four grandchildren.
After the mass wedding, Fernandinos were treated to a Valentine’s Day concert at the Ninoy Aquino Amphitheater of Heroes Hall. The evening of love music was led by the Magsilbi Tamu Brass Band 919 and was participated in by homegrown Fernandino talents, including special guest Ara Muna.
“This is our way of relaxing and giving tribute to Fernandinos who have been part of our success and in becoming a habitat of human excellence which we all desire for them,” Rodriguez said. (Jovi T. De Leon)
