Church stays opposed to RH bill
February 15, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Archbishop Paciano Aniceto said over the weekend that the Catholic Church maintains its opposition to the Reproductive Health (RH) bill.
Last week, the bill passed through Congress despite the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)’s staunch rejection of some of its major provisions. It was approved on the committee level handling the said bill.
“We will continue opposing the approval of the bill. Sa committee level pa lang naman iyan,” said Aniceto, who heads the CBCP’s Episcopal Commission on Family and Life.
The prelate added: “That is not good for our people. Definitely, its major anti-life provisions should be amended. And we, fighting for life, are ready to go to jail if we have to.”
Aniceto said the bill’s passage is being “influenced” by big Euro pharmaceutical companies that are out to make money of the issue, of which many Filipinos are vulnerable.
“Just imagine, sisirain nila ang katawan ng ating kababaihan. Tapos they would even earn from it. There’s a lot of evil in there and plenty of social and moral issues,” he said.
He said they will continue to oppose the bill “until we are heard and amendments are made.” (Jovi T. De Leon)
