Meat company invited to hog farm inspection

February 9, 2011

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Governor Lilia Pineda has invited representatives of Monterey Foods Corporation to assist the Provincial Government in the upcoming inspection of hog farms in Porac town.

“We invited the technical working group (TWG) of Monterey to help us when we start inspecting the sanitation measures of hog farms in Porac,” Pineda said.

Monterey is the country’s largest hog and cattle operation that uses the latest technology in feed milling, breeding, livestock raising, slaughtering, meat retailing and meat processing.

It started operating in 1969 in a 1,200-hectare cattle ranch in Isabela. In 1980, it became a subsidiary of San Miguel Corporation, the Philippines’ largest food, beverage and packaging conglomerate.

Monterey meat products are known to consumers to be of high quality.
Pineda said Monterey’s TWG could give recommendations to hog farm operators in three villages of Porac on how they can improve their sanitation measures and gradually eliminate the foul smell they emanate.

Residents in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Sinura and Manibaug Paralaya have been complaining about foul stench released by at least 14 big piggeries and poultry farms in the villages, causing various illnesses among them.

Ruperto Cruz, president of the Pinoy Gumising Ka Movement (PGKM), said the governor’s idea is a welcome move for them.

“We’re saluting her for doing that. She’s the only Kapampangan official who is really taking the problem of foul stench in Porac seriously,” Cruz said.

He said their group is expecting a long-term solution to their concern with Pineda on their side.

PGKM and other environmental groups like Krusada Kontra Amoy have sought for the immediate closure, or relocation of violating hog farms.
Officials from the local government unit said the long-term solution to the foul smell is the creation of a comprehensive land use plan.

The LGU has earlier created a monitoring team as a short-term solution to the hog concerns. However, the monitoring only lasted for two days. (Charlene Cayabyab)
