Mayor: Toxic waste not ours
January 21, 2011
ANGELES CITY โ Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan of this city denied that industrial establishments here release industrial wastes that have contributed to the toxic waste build-up in Macabebe town.
“Angeles is an entertainment city, its industry is tourism and not industrial plants that produce toxic wastes like that of carbonated beverages,” Pamintuan said.
Pamintuan made the statement after City of San Fernando Mayor Oscar
Rodriguez said that industrial wastes flowing in Pampanga rivers are mostly due to wastes from Angeles City.
Rodriguez said only a portion of these industrial wastes come from his city since establishments there are required to put up water treatment facilities.
San Fernandoโs industrial wastes were earlier pointed out by Macabebe Mayor Anette Balgan to have caused the toxic waste build-up in her town.
Only household wastes
Pamintuan stressed that this city only accumulates household wastes but the throwing of such garbage in rivers has been substantially eliminated.
โWe were able to substantially eliminate the throwing of ordinary home garbage. In fact, we have placed some 10-foot steel fences on bridges to protect the creek against illegal dumping,โ Pamintuan said.
Auxilliary Bishop Pablo Virgilio David also took part in eliminating the dumping of garbage in rivers through his โSave the Sapang Balenโ project.
The cityโs garbage, Pamintuan added, is gathered and properly disposed off in a sanitary landfill in San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan and at times in Montalban, Rizal.
Pamintuan said environment issues were among his top concerns when he assumed office in July last year so he included it in his eight-point agenda.
โMeetings with the barangay captains are consistently held to brief each citizen of their respective areas to proper sanitation and segregation. We even urged the public to use cloth bags or paper bags when purchasing on public markets, groceries, or malls instead of the conventional plastic bags. The use of trash bins on every public transport vehicle was also strictly implemented recently,โ Pamintuan said.(Charlene Cayabyab)
