Dialysis machines presented to Angeleños

January 18, 2011

ANGELES CITY – At least six of the 15 dialysis machines from the World Medical Relief (WMR) were presented to Angeleños on Monday.

These dialysis machines were the primary components of the two 40-foot container vans that arrived at the Subic Bay Freeport last week. The other nine machines are expected to arrive here within the week.

The machines were shipped from Michigan, United States of America, to the Philippines through the help of the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce (FCCC) based in this city. The shipping fee of P1.5 million was shouldered by the business group.

Aside from the dialysis machines, the first batch of medical equipment also include an X-ray machine, a cardiac monitoring machine, an ultrasound machine and a phaco-machine worth P14 million.

A phaco-machine is one of the newest equipments used for cataract surgery.

It also includes dialysis chairs, hospital beds, walkers, crutches and medical supplies such as gauze sponges and under pads, among others.

The dialysis machines will be temporarily housed at the Rafael Lazatin Memorial Medical Center (formerly Ospital ning Angeles).

“Later on, we will put up a new hospital to house all of these equipments. Right now we are focusing on building a dialysis center located at the back of the city hospital,” Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan said.

The FCCC, which will also shoulder the construction of the dialysis center, has allotted at least P2.4 million for its construction.

The future city dialysis center, Pamintuan said, will help poor, and even well-off Angeleños who are suffering from kidney or renal failure in their dialysis treatment expenses.

He said a patient undergoing a dialysis treatment spends around P5,000 to P7,500 per week and another P2,800 for the dialysis filter.

“We’re studying how we can better help patients by cutting on the prices of dialysis treatment. If the patient will be certified as an indigent, we’ll work on giving the treatment for free,” Pamintuan said. (Charlene Cayabyab)
