Green group urged: Reconsider stand on tree cutting
Tuesday, January 11, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO โ A businessman has reiterated his call to an environmentalist group to reconsider their position regarding the cutting of trees along the McArthur Highway in this city.
Renato Romero, newly installed vice chairman of the Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PamCham), said some of the trees along the highway have naturally fallen, causing danger among motorists.
โEspecially now that itโs either raining or windy, the trees along the highway tend to bend and later on fall down by themselves. This could cause danger to motorists,โ Romero said.
Romero said he has personally seen trees falling along the highway hitting some vehicles.
Eugene Orejas, spokesperson of the Save the Trees Coalition, said the trees are healthy and strong since they have withstood typhoons and flooding.
โThe more than 1,500 trees aged more than 50 years in Pampanga alone have withstood the past typhoons and flooding. Hence, they are healthy and strong and do not pose danger to the public,โ Orejas said.
Orejas added that they heed to the proposal and design of a university professor of sparing trees despite road widening projects.
โReconsider standโ
At least 36 trees along the McArthur Highway in Barangay Sindalan going to the city proper were marked for cutting by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Central Luzon.
About 24 trees were already cut.
The tree cutting is part of the P440-million road widening project of the Department of Public Works and Highways.
However, the tree cutting was stopped when the STC rallied against it. The group wanted the trees to be salvaged and suggested the construction of a third lane behind the stretch of trees.
The road widening project was stopped after the protests.
Romero, however, reiterated his call to the STC to reconsider their position to give way to development.
โOnce investments come to the province, we will have heavy traffic congestion every year since our roads are narrow,โ Romero said. (Charlene Cayabyab)
