Tax agency to probe firms not paying amusement taxes
December 22, 2010
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) here is set to probe establishments who are found not paying the proper amusement tax of 18 percent, paying instead the value added tax (VAT) of 12 percent.
BIR-Central Luzon Regional Director Romulo Aguila Jr. said the move is part of the agency’s revenue collection measures to run after establishments not paying proper taxes.
The BIR, he said, will start implementing the program among business establishments in the Clark Freeport, Olongapo and Angeles City.
The program will validate whether selected establishments are indeed paying proper amusement taxes.
He added that they have received reports that some amusement establishments have been under-declaring their earnings in order to skip paying the proper taxes.
“This move tries to solidify our objective of fair tax collection among business establishments. Establishments found to be violating the law will be meted with the proper sanctions,” Aguila told Sun.Star Pampanga.
He said that the BIR is encouraging the public to help with the program by asking for receipts upon availing of services and products from amusement establishments. Incentives await people who report erring establishments to the BIR.
Aguila said that establishments found under-declaring their tax obligations may be closed under the Oplan Kandado program.
The BIR here has already closed some 20 large and small establishments starting last year under the Oplan Kandado program from all across Central Luzon. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
