Pawnshop’s security alarm scares burglars away
December 22, 2010
ANGELES CITY — Suspected members of an acetylene gang reportedly failed to rob a Cebuana Lhuiller branch in Barangay Balibago, this city, after the establishment’s burglar alarm went off and scared them away.
Police Station chief Luisito M. Tan, said the robbery attempt Sunday night was foiled when the pawnshop’s security alarm, which is equipped with an image sensor, was triggered.
Christopher Mandap, general manager of Cebuana Lhuiller Balibago Branch on First Street, confirmed that the suspects were able to enter the pawnshop by breaking the establishment’s cement flooring.
The suspects, who rented an apartment adjacent to the pawnshop, reportedly built a tunnel at a vacant lot leading to the establishment.
Tan said the suspects were already inside and were about to open the vault when the alarm went off.
Andrew Pamintuan, owner of the Generio Dan Internet CafΓ© near the pawnshop, heard the alarm and immediately called the police.
Tan said he quickly dispatched a team of cops to respond to the call but the suspects managed to get away.
Police recovered an oxygen tank, a bonnet, hydraulic jack and two jackets from the suspects’ rented apartment.
Witnesses said they saw six male individuals come out of the pawnshop when the alarm sounded.
Aida Villamor, who owns the apartment rented by the suspects, said a woman with a Visayan accent who introduced herself as Evelyn rented two rooms.
Evelyn told the landlady that she was with four male tenants and that a religious group will pay for the rooms.
Tan said he met with owners and managers of pawnshops, banks, and money transfer firms three months ago and discussed the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and burglar alarms in their respective establishments.
“Nakatulong talaga yung alarm. Importante rin yung CCTV sa paglutas ng mga robbery cases,” Tan said. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
