Terror threats no effect on Central Luzon tourism: exec
CLARK FREEPORT — Terrorist threats in the country have not posed any negative effects on Central Luzon’s tourism so far, an official said.
“As of now, threats of terrorism in the country have no negative impacts yet to the region’s tourism,” Ronaldo Tiotuico, chief of the Department of Tourism in Central Luzon, said.
As proof, Tiotuico said passengers at the Clark International Airport Corporation from various countries have increased.
He added that malls and other public places across the region have heightened security measures.
“We even talked to airlines here to increase their security measures, as well,” Tiotuico said.
Early this week, the Australian and United Kingdom governments have issued travel advisories against the high threat of terrorist attacks in the Philippines.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, in its advisory, said “reliable reports indicate that terrorist attacks may be imminent in Manila, including places frequented by foreigners such as large shopping malls and convention centers.”
Meanwhile, Britain’s Foreign & Commonwealth Office advisory read: “Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travelers. Such places could include, but are not limited to, airports, shopping malls, places of worship, etc.”
Later, the United States of America has also issued a travel warning.
The American travel advisory warned its citizens of risks of terrorist activity in the country particularly in Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago.
According to the advisory, “terrorist attacks could be indiscriminate and could occur not only in the southern islands but also in other areas, to include Manila. Targeted sites may be public gathering places that are frequented by expatriates and foreign travelers, including American citizens.”
Despite these advisories, Tiotuico said tourists who would like to visit Central Luzon should not worry because it is far from terrorist areas.
“We’re proud from being far from terrorist areas but we are still heightening security measures,” he said. (Charlene Cayabyab)
