Motion to deputize Kalam filed
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – A board member filed on Monday a resolution urging Governor Lilia Pineda to deputize the members of the Kapampangan a Lulugud at Matapat (Kalam) who are tasked to apprehend illegal quarry operators in the province.
Board Member Nestor Tolentino said Resolution No. 1709 aims to enforce better monitoring procedures in the province. It will also enable Kalam members to apprehend trucks reportedly involved in illegal quarrying with the help of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Some operators and quarry truckers are allegedly operating in the province without the necessary permits.
Tolentino said deputizing the Kalam members would give the Capitol a better hand against illegal quarrying activities.
Kalam is the replacement of the quarry monitoring team established by former Governor Eddie Panlilio. Its current officials are the original Biyaya A Luluguran at Sisikapan (Balas Boys) who served the previous administration.
In their stint as former Balas, they have collected more than P20.9 million for August 2007. In August 2008, a year after they were dismissed from the quarry operations, collections decreased to at least P12.6 million and posted at P17.1 million in August 2009.
Under Kalam, however, the province’s collections have been showing a steady growth. Its seven-day collection since they started had hit a record breaking feat of P8.175 million.
Tolentino said the need to protect and empower both the quarry collection and the Kalam members, respectively, should be given enough priority. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
