Health department reactivates ‘no firecracker’ campaign

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–While everyone is busy preparing for the New Year celebration, the health department stays vigilant on the campaign against the use of firecrackers for a happy and safe welcoming of the year 2013.
This is in line with the Department of Health’s (DOH) Aksyon: Paputok Injury Reduction (APIR) that aims to lessen firecracker use, firecracker related injuries and deaths, indiscriminate firing of fire arms, firecracker powder ingestion and fireworks-related non-neonatal tetanus.
Aside from disseminating APIR posters in communities, the Center for Health Development 3 (CHD-3) taps the Local Government Units (LGUs) to set up fireworks display zones and the Philippine National Police (PNP) for the surveillance and enforcement of prohibited firecrackers ban.
To avoid any harm and injury, APIR aims to remind the public that fireworks cause injuries and endanger health, children should not use any fireworks, keep safe and keep away from exploding fireworks, never pick used fireworks and seek immediate medical treatment for all firework injuries.
Health Regional Director Leonita Gorgolon is encouraging the public to use safer materials to create noise such as stereos, vehicle horns, cans, and pots and pans.
Without using firecrackers, according to Gorgolon, the celebration could be as fun and complete by participating on community fireworks display, street parties and concerts.
Based on the data gathered from hospitals and rural health units (RHUs) in the region by the Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (RESU), a total of 465 persons were injured from December 21, 2011 to January 5, 2012.
Most of the victims sustained burns and blasts which include amputation on severe cases. Some sustained injury on the eyes and gun shot wound.
This year, as of December 26, there are nine firecracker-related injuries in the region reported to the surveillance unit. Piccolo is still the major cause of injuries especially among children. ● Au Catu
