Kapampangan experts launch language manual

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — A group of language experts launched Monday the first ever standard Kapampangan Orthography at the Pampanga Capitol, giving the current generation of Kapampangan language learners and teachers a better chance at learning and writing in their own language.
Language experts from the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, Holy Angel University, Angeles University Foundation, Department of Education, Kapmapangan writers, Pampanga Language Council, Dila and the Archdiocese of San Fernando sat down to formally come out with the language manual.
Steering the group is Dr. Anicia Hizon del Corro, the foremost expert and scholar in the Kapampangan language.
The group formally presented the Kapampangan Orthography manual to Provincial Government officials here who will be encouraging its use in various public schools.
Erlinda Cruz of the Center for Kapampangan Studies said the group sat together over the course of three months.
She said the initiative will help in the promotion of the Kapampangan language among young learners who will be guided by a manual of use in the course of their study.
The DepEd Order 16, s. 2012 launches the MTB-MLE Program this school year for kindergarten, Grades 1, 2 and 3. However, it presented more problems in terms of availability of resource materials, competent instruction and a unified manual in the instruction of the language.
Kapampangan Orthography is composed of 30 letters, which are the following: Aa, Bb, Cc, CHch, Dd, Ee, Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk, Ll, Mm, Nn, Ññ, NGng, Oo, Pp, Qq, Rr, Ss, SHsh, Tt, Uu, Vv, Ww, Xx, Yy, Zz.
Del Corro said the rules in capitalization will be the same with Filipino. Like for instance, at the start of a sentence and first letter of proper nouns.
One point in the manual said that the letter β€œc” should be used in spelling loan words and proper nouns. The sound [k] of c in common nouns should be represented by k. Example for this rule includes Catacutan (surname) and Katakutan (afraid).
The orthography manual also provides guides on the spelling of words, capitalization, use of barrowed words, and syllabication among others.
Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino chairman Jose Laderas Santos lauded efforts of the people in making the orthography manual, stressing that this is in response to the call of the United Nations and a recognition of the place of Kapampangan in the family of languages in the country and the world.
Kapampangan is among 180 languages in the Philippines.
