Pineda vows help for Zapanta

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–Governor Lilia G. Pineda on Monday vowed to support the family of a Kapampangan overseas Filipino worker recently sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia for allegedly stealing and killing his Sudanese landlord.
Joselito Zapanta, 31, a father of two, is a native of Mexico town. He was deployed in Saudi Arabia in October 2008 as a tile setter.
In an interview, Pineda said she had personally called Vice President Jejomar Binay to help the family of Zapanta to appeal his case in the Apellate Court in Saudi Arabia.
On that same day, Binay, along with Zapantas’ kin, flew to Saudi Arabia to negotiate with the family of the Sudanese victim who are asking for P55-million blood money.
On Tuesday, Zapanta was given a four-month reprieve while the blood money is being raised.
Pineda also asked the Commission on Audit (COA) to donate in the fund raising of Zapanta’s liberty. The COA has donated some P3 million.
Malacañang also donated P4 million.
The governor said she will personally support Zapanta’s family as she asked her kabalens to pray for Kapampangan OFWs who are sentenced to death abroad.
Zapanta was sentenced to death by the Saudi Court of First Instance on April 13 last year.
However, Zapanta pleaded self-defense, saying he accidentally killed his landlord when the latter beat him up over a dispute on rental dues.
Zapanta’s case is now on appeal according to Department of Foreign Affairs.
He ran away from his original employer, however, claiming he was not being paid his salary. He eventually found a new job and rented a room under the Sudanese national.
He has been in Malaz Central Jail in Riyadh since June last year.
