Fishermen compete in National Outstanding Volunteer Award

BALANGA CITY, Bataan โ€“ A group of fishermen in this city has been chosen to compete in National Outstanding Volunteer Award 2012 (NOVA) under the group category.
NOVA is a recognition conferred by the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency to outstanding volunteer individuals and organizations, including corporate volunteering initiatives.
The Balanga City Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (CFARMC) which is a group of 24 volunteers fishermen started doing volunteerism since the year 1998 with its mission to continue the advocacy of unity, involvement, and nurture the community of Balanga that will further improve the fisheries industry in the said city.
According to the City Agriculture Office, City Agriculturist Nerissa Mateo, โ€œCFARMC helped in the preparation of the Fisheries Development Plan of Balanga. They are self-motivated to enforce the full implementation of fisheries ordinances and resolutions pertaining to coastal water conservation, management and development.โ€
โ€œTheir volunteer works is one of the cityโ€™s strength in the success of achieving our goals towards our development to become a University town in the year 2020, and also, they serve as a role model to the community who lead and act without expecting any compensation coming from the government,โ€ she added.
CFARMCโ€™s Bantay-Dagat also assists in the strict enforcement of fishery laws, rules and regulation in the city waters which served as the implementing arm of the city in terms of strengthening fishery programs and projects.
CFARMC Chairman Roberto Malibiran said among the noteworthy accomplishments that they have done is the conduct of regular monitoring and surveillance operation.
โ€œWe are safeguarding the waters in Balanga from illegal activities and most of the time we have to even risk our lives because some fisherfolks outside Balanga donโ€™t like this scheme that we are doing.โ€
Among the awards and recognitions that the city group received are Most Outstanding Regional winner of GawadSaka in the year 2011; Hall of Famer, most supportive agricultural organization, 2011; and regional winner for outstanding volunteers, 2011.
