Sofitel’s Spiral restaurant to reopen on Nov. 7
MANILA, Philippines – Sofitel Philippine Plaza’s famous Spiral restaurant, which was damaged by storm surge at the height of typhoon “Pedring” last year, will reopen next month.
Sofitel general manager Goran Aleks said the management has invested around P500 million for the renovation of the hotel, of which P210 million was spent for its flood control project.
The Spiral buffet restaurant will reopen on Nov. 7.
“We will have a soft opening later this month,” Aleks said at a press conference yesterday.
Massive flooding hit the five-star hotel along Roxas Boulevard on Sept. 27, 2011 after a portion of Manila Bay’s seawall collapsed as Pedring battered the metropolis.
Aleks said they contracted international engineering experts and three levels of typhoon protection were identified by a commissioned international consultant on flood control based on weather and water levels.
“First was the construction of a retaining wall that is 0.9 meters high, which serves as a defense for the property’s building perimeter. Second was improving the hotel perimeter’s drainage. This required a new drainage piping layout, thus declogging and increasing the size of the existing pipe network. Third was the construction of a 100-meter long trench canal to enable the water coming in the hotel to be diverted back to Manila Bay,” he said.
Waterworks expert Veltrup was commissioned to eliminate the hard deposits and stone to ensure proper flow, he said.
Aleks said regular maintenance of the system will be done before the rainy season.
In case of strong typhoons, submersible pumps are ready to redirect overflowing water to Manila Bay, he added.
He said an onsite weather station has also been set up to measure wind speed, direction and rainfall intensity, which provides hotel management with sufficient information to determine the necessary level of action during bad weather.
