Party-list groups clash amid Comelec ‘purge’

AMID the ongoing strict review of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on existing party-list organizations, rival groups Akbayan and Anakbayan on Tuesday came into blows in a restaurant in Manila.

In the middle of the press conference called by Akbayan in Ermita, Manila, four members of Anakbayan disrupted the press conference when they suddenly stood up and started shouting “Disqualify Akbayan Fake Party-list!”

A member of the group also accused the Akbayan of being a puppet of the Aquino administration.

The supporters of Akbayan, on the other hand, booed Anakbayan and started shouting “KSP” or kulang sa pansin (attention grabber).

Last October 8, the National Union of Students of the Philippines, Anakbayan and other youth groups said Akbayan had ceased to represent the marginalized sector and should be disqualified from the elections.

Their petition cited the appointment to government posts of several Akbayan members as reason to prove that they are not anymore non-marginalized and underrepresented.

To note, Akbayan was the one that nominated the senatorial run of Risa Hontiveros under the Liberal Party (LP) coalition of President Benigno Aquino III.

Among the other notable Akbayan members are Presidential Political Adviser Ronald Llamas, National Anti-Poverty Commission Chair Joel Rocamora, Commission on Human Rights chairperson Loretta Rosales, Government Service Insurance System board member Mario Aguja, Palace Undersecretary for Political Affairs Ibarra Gutierrez III, and Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor Commissioner Angelina Ludovice-Katoh.

In an interview after the incident, Akbayan Representative Walden Bello explained to the media why he lost his cool during the altercation.

“I did show some anger. I admit it. But then who would not be angry if somebody or a group deprives you of the freedom of speech? Unfortunately talaga, it’s the modus operandi of Anakbayan and some of the groups behind them. They donโ€™t respect the freedom of speech. We will never do that to them,” he said.

However, the lawmaker denied the accusation that they are now a pro-administration party but admitted that they are allies of the government.

“But that does not mean that we don’t represent the affairs of the marginalized sector. We are in Congress and the administration to more effectively represent the interest of the marginalized massesโ€ฆ We are a force that participates in politics but we are also critical when we need to be critical,” said Bello.

For its part, the Comelec assured all party-list groups that political affiliations of their organizations are not among their considerations on whether to approve or reject a party-list.

“When the final listing comes out, they will realize that we are not favoring anybody,” said Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes.

Asked for the status of the Akbayan case, the poll chief said it remains under study.

Check our new look and tell us what you think.

“We have not voted on it yet. We are still deliberating on the case. That is why it remains under study by the commission en banc,” said Brillantes.

With new golf courses springing up in and around Clark Philippines and an ever-increasing patronage by tourists from neighboring South Korea, Clark Freeport is short on hotel accommodation.

Even with the addition of 27 holes in 2009 and 2010, there is an acute shortage golf tee times for at least 5-6 months each year. Local players compete with frustrated (golf) tourists from Korea and China for tee times. Unfortunately Clark Philippines doesnโ€™t have the luxury of vast tracts of land suitable for this type of development.

Mimosa offers 36 holes of championship golf, visitors can pay and play, busy during the weekends but not that difficult to get on or join up with a group to form a 4-ball. The new FAKCC offers 27 holes of world-class golf.
