3 teachers killed, 2 missing as river current sweeps jeep in Batangas
Three teachers were killed while two remain missing after a strong river current swept their jeep in Batangas province Wednesday evening, the Office of Civil Defense said Thursday.
Frederick Bragas of the OCD in Southern Luzon said the teachers were on their way home from attending a local official’s wake when the incident occurred.
“Mga guro ito, dumalo sa lamay ng kapitan. May ilog na kailangan tawiran, all of a sudden dumating ang malakas na tubig at tinangay ang owner-type jeep,” Bragas said in an interview on dzBB radio.
He said the incident occurred between 6:30 and 7 p.m. in Lobo town in Batangas.
Bragas said that while there had been no rain in the area, the current may have come from neighboring Rosario town, where there was heavy rain the day before.
Citing initial information, he said teams managed to rescue one of the passengers, whom he did not immediately identify.
He initially identified the three fatalities as head teacher Emiliana Lontoc, Menchie Degayeta and Nelia Dieco. He identified the missing as driver Efren Lontoc and Jon Adris.
Search operations are now ongoing, with the Air Force, the military’s Southern Luzon Command, provincial police and disaster risk reduction and management council joining the search. β RSJ, GMA News
