Daanbantayan’s Loot airs support for PJ

DAANBANTAYAN Municipal Mayor Ma. Luisa Loot yesterday said that she has decided to support the gubernatorial bid of Rep. Pablo John Garcia (Cebu, third district) after the congressman’s rival, Hilario Davide III, fielded a candidate to run against her.
“How can I support Davide when his group is fielding the same slate in the Liberal Party (LP) who ran against us in the May 10, 2010 elections?” Loot asked.
Loot was referring to Augusto “Itok” Corro whom she defeated in the 2010 elections and who is running again for mayor under the LP ticket. Corro’s running mate is Gilbert Arabis.
The mayor said her conflict in the past with Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia made her support Davide’s gubernatorial bid in the 2010 elections.
Loot said she told Davide she will support him in 2013 if he can ensure that LP would not field a candidate against her.

“He told me that he will try to convince Junie (Bogo City Mayor Celestino Martinez Jr.),” she said.
But Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale, Davide’s runningmate, told Loot’s son, Provincial Board Member Sun Shimura, that they could not stop Martinez, the fourth district chairperson of the LP, from fielding a full slate in Daanbantayan.
Loot said she called Pablo John yesterday and told him he has her support.
“He told me he was happy about my decision. He told me ‘dugay na ko nangandoy nga mobalik ka (I’ve longed for you to come back).’ I have no problem with PJ because he is different from Governor Gwen. We can work together,” Loot said.
Voters
Loot said Davide probably did not consider that Daanbantayan has more voters—over 50,000—than Bogo City, which has only 42,000.
Loot is a member of the Nacionalista Party, but she said Cynthia Villar told her that national leaders will not meddle in local politics.
“I don’t even need a party because I am the incumbent. I have the machinery and I can finance my own campaign,” Loot said.
She said she had committed to support businesswoman Mariquita Salimbangon Yeung, who will run for mayor of Bogo City.
“This time, we will make sure that Martinez will be defeated,” Loot said.
