DOH: Generic drugs effective vs leptospirosis

THE Department of Health (DOH) on Sunday vouched for the effectivity of generic doxycycline in preventing leptospirosis, which is threatening hundreds of thousands of families in Luzon affected by the torrential rains and massive flooding.
Health Secretary Enrique Ona said the public should not hesitate in asking for generic drugs to be used against possible illnesses brought by the flood since they are equally effective in preventing them.
“Ask your doctor to prescribe generic drugs as much as possible,” he said.
Doxycycline is an antibiotic that is currently recommended to prevent leptospirosis among those with increased risk of exposure.
At present, the Health department said the price of a generic, 100- milligram doxycycline capsule varies from P2 to P15 depending on the manufacturer. The capsule is available in government hospitals and commercial drugstores.
Last week, President Benigno Aquino III said a pharmaceutical company would be investigated for jacking up its prices by as much as 750 times more.
Malacañang could not identify which specific company is involved in the overpricing but said they received information that medicine for leptospirosis had gone up dramatically.
Ona is appealing to drug companies, distributors and pharmacies to make affordable the prices of medicines, especially doxycycline even as the DOH has already distributed the drug for free for rescue and relief teams and residents in evacuation centers.
Leptospirosis is caused by a bacteria called Leptospira, which can be transmitted to humans through water, food, or soil containing urine from infected animals – usually rats.

Aquino, government officials visit flood-hit areas
PAMPANGA — President Benigno Aquino III, along with some Liberal Party stalwarts, trooped to Barangay Sto. Nino in this city to distribute relief goods to thousands of flood victims and to assess the southwest monsoon’s damages in the province.

Aquino arrived from Tarlac and Bataan with Joel Villanueva of the Technical Education Skills and Development Authority (Tesda), and Aurora Representative Juan Edgardo Angara, Energy Secretary Jose Almendras, Public Works Secretary Rogelio Singson, Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo, Social Welfare Secretary Corazon Soliman and Akbayan spokesperson Risa Hontiveros.

Clark firm to distribute relief goods to flood-stricken areas
CLARK FREEPORT — The Clark Development Corporation (CDC) is set to distribute an initial 5,000 packs of assorted relief goods to families affected by recent monsoon floods in low-lying areas of Pampanga.

The CDC has initially distributed relief goods to affected residents of Barangay Dau (113 families) and Sapang Biabas (30) in nearby Mabalacat City and Angeles City (290).

Relief delivery marks 40th day of Geertman’s death
ANGELES CITY — The Alay Bayan Luson Inc. (ABI Luson) commemorates the 40th day of the killing of executive director Wilhelmus “Willem” Geertman with a relief delivery operation.

The relief operation was conducted in Barangay San Joaqion, in the municipality of Sta. Ana, instead of the usual candle lighting and mass, said Ranilo Margallo, campaign and advocacy officer of ABI Luson on Saturday.

PAMPANGA — Sleepless and mustering her strength for her round-the-clock rounds of the province, Governor Lilia Pineda said Friday that after the massive relief operations by the Provincial Government, immediate rehabilitation of damaged infrastructure and crops would follow.

“What we are doing now is prioritizing everything from relief operations to assessment of damaged infrastructure. It was good that we were ready for this kind of a big calamity,” she said.
