Airphil starts flying from Clark airport
FOREIGN and domestic tourists who wish to avoid taking flights at the already-congested Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) now have the option to get to the country’s exciting destinations as low-cost carrier Airphil Express commences flights from and to Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC).
Beginning March 29, Airphil Express will mount flights from Clark to Cebu, Davao, Kalibo and Puerto Princesa.
During the official launching held at the Holiday Inn in Clark, Pampanga last Friday, Airphil Express senior vice president for sales and marketing Alfred Herrera noted a strong market potential in the area.
“The population in North and Central Luzon is estimated at around 18 million, which is virtually 25 percent of the entire Philippine population. Add to that is the growing number of foreign tourists who are also exploring the northern area of the country, who can now conveniently travel directly to Visayas and Mindanao,” Herrera said.
For the new Clark operations, Airphil Express will deploy Airbus A320 units that will have a capacity of 180 passengers. Early this year, the company acquired three Airbus A320 units that can fly at longer flight distances with less fuel consumption.
Herrera said they are considering two more aircrafts by the third quarter of this year.
Airphil Express’ Clark route to Cebu is scheduled every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Its Davao route flies every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday; Clark to Kalibo every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday; and Clark to Puerto Princesa, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Market share
Herrera said the expansion of Airphil Express in Clark is part of the company’s expansion plans this year to steadily increase its market share in the growing budget carrier industry in the Philippines.
Airphil Express’ current market share is 23 percent.
The four additional domestic routes will bring the total number of Airphil Express’ daily scheduled flights to 32 local destinations.
“For these new flights we target the leisure market especially the Koreans and Chinese, with brand awareness, we will eventually be tapped by the business market,” Herrera said.
Airphil Express, the sister company of Philippine Airlines, hopes to double the four million passengers it serviced in 2011 this year.
“We may be a small player in the local budget airline, we may lack size but we make up for this in terms of performance. We will compete with the giant and provide world-class travel experience,” said Airphil Express president and chief executive officer Peter Ong.
Ong said he sees the Cebu hub as an important growth driver of the company.
“Manila is already saturated and we are looking at secondary gateways to facilitate the growth of low-cost-carriers. We will be definitely mounting more flights for Cebu,” Ong said.
According to Airphil Express, low-cost carriers are currently the driver of the aviation boom in the country. “We are looking at more movements in the industry this year,” Herrera said.
Aside from expanding their domestic operations, Airphil Express is also set to extend its reach, flying from Clark to Hong Kong, Singapore and Bangkok this May. The airline is also looking at mounting flights to Tagbilaran City, Bohol.
