Corona’s taking the witness stand won’t help him: Aquino

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III said Friday that the prosecution team could not force Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona to testify in the impeachment court since his appearance could not help him.

Aquino, in an interview in Oriental Mindoro, said Corona might further be pinned down from the cases hurled against him, that is why his defense counsels advised him not to take the witness stand.
“His chief counsel could have a message for us. And it’s simple, Chief Justice’s taking the witness stand would not help (on his case),” he said.

He said Corona’s appearance at the impeachment court will surely help the prosecution team.

“But we cannot force (them),” the President said.

Lawyer Serafin Cuevas, Corona’s chief legal counsel, has said the defense team would not allow Corona to testify so that he could not be cross-examined and even the senator-judges could not ask him questions.

The defense team will start presenting its witnesses and pieces of evidence when the impeachment trial resumes on March 12.

Asked if he believed that Corona’s shying away from the witness stand was his way not to be cross-examined, Aquino said he did not want to impute anything since it is already Lenten season.

“I could still remember what my mother told me that if I could not say something good to others, I should rather shut up. I will just be quiet on that,” he said.

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and MalacaΓ±ang have urged Corona to testify in the impeachment court to answer all the allegations being thrown at him.
