Harassment claim vs mining firm denied
MANILA, Philippines β Mining firm TVI Resource Development (Phil) Inc. denied harassment claim allegedly perpetrated by its Special Civilian Armed Auxiliary (SCAA) forces in an exploration site in Zamboanga del Sur.
This after at least 10 local journalists went to Balabag mining site in Bayog town late Sunday following reports that TVIRD, through its security forces, sets to demolish small-scale processing sites in the area.
The mining company however denied the allegations, saying there was no reported incident in the copper-rich mining area under the Balabag Project Mineral Production Sharing Agreement.
Balabag is some 30 kilometers from the nearest national highway in Diplahan town in the neighbor province of Zamboanga Sibugay. While most of the operators in Balabag mining were small-scale, the holder of the 4,000-hectare exploration permit in the area was TVIRD.
The issue stemmed when Hirohito “Jong” Cadion of the National Union of Journalist of the Philippines (NUJP) in the province accused TVIRD security forces of taking them hostage for over four hours on February 20.
He said the covering journalist were alarmed when they received reports that a group of SCAA blocked the access road from-and-to the mining site.
For his part, Ron Jabal, TVIRD public affairs director, denied the allegations while dubbing the claimed of the local media as “fabricated story and imagined scenarios”.
“There is no truth to the reporters’ claim that they were held overnight nor was there any truth to their claim that the company blocked the road leading to the TVIRD project site,” the mining company said in a statement.
He said the Philippine National Police and the military forces in the area conducted verification of the incident but it did not occur.
“There was no such incident,” Jabal said while noting that the mining firm’s SCAA was under the control of the military in the area.
“The 53rd IB really looks into the allegations, but walang nangyari at all. There was no incident, no hostage taking,” he added.
For her part, Bayog town information officer Bernadine Astillero-Gabawan said local police checked the area but the claimed incident has not happened.
She said the group was fetch by the Philippine Army but they did not ride the vehicles “to make it appear as they were really taken hostage”.
“LGU β Bayog believes that this malicious propaganda was initiated by those who have their own personal motives; persons who deliberately waste their time to tarnish Bayogβs hard-earned image,” she added
“It is disappointing that the said pseudo hostage victims who are expected to be vanguards of truth become avenues for manipulated and false info to spread,” she concluded.
