Kayabe: Forging ahead in anti-drugs campaign

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — After Porac Vice Mayor Dexter Albert David received Monday a plaque of recognition for advocating the Provincial Government’s war on drugs through the “Kayanakan: Yaman Ning Balen at Ehemplu Laban Queng Droga” or “Kayabe,” he told Sun.Star Pampanga that he continuously prays efforts will prove positive.
David, who has served as “big brother” for the campaign that started in Porac less than two years ago, beamed as he offered the received plaque to brothers and sisters of Kayabe in rites that highlighted the Philippine National Police’s 21st founding anniversary at Bale Katimawan of the Pampanga Provincial Police Office in this city.
As Governor Lilia Pineda commended David and the Kayabe team, David was quick to tell Sun.Star Pampanga that it was a concerted effort between Capitol and concerned youth of 22 towns across the province, plus the able support of the police.
“The success of Kayabe lies in our united efforts to protect the youth from drugs. Proudly, I would admit we started it at Porac where we have two chapters now and have established about 11 province-wide. So far, in towns we visited and promoted the program, we have more or less 500 members pursuing the war on illegal drugs,” David said.
He said that together with wife Mai Laus-David, they go on talks to youth communities regularly to disseminate information on ill-effects of drugs.
“We don’t mind really even if we spend our weekends just to promote Kayabe. It has its rewards and my wife and family are very happy about it,” added the young vice mayor.
The Kayabe program, he explained, allows youth and volunteers to enter into a three-day stay in program that allows them to immerse into the anti-drugs war.
“From there, they would pursue and advocate the cause in a brother-sister program. I am so thankful to the Provincial Government and the Pampanga Police headed by Director Edgardo Tinio for the opportunity of letting me be the first Kayabe Big Brother,” David said.
