Tupas’ property a diversion from impeachment: Palace

MALACANANG defended Tuesday the head of the prosecution team, Iloilo Representative Niel Tupas Jr., who was recently reported to own a P50-million mansion in Quezon City.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the report on Tupas’ property was meant to distract the impeachment proceedings against Chief Justice Renato Corona.
“That obviously this is a diversion from what the actual issue is,” deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said. “The issue here is the impeachment of the Chief Justice. So, for all intents and purposes, the issue should be focused on his fitness.”
Tupas earlier admitted owning a house at Xavierville Subdivision in Quezon City as reported by a daily broadsheet but clarified that it is only worth P14 million.
He said he has yet to declare the property in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN) because he only acquired it last year. He noted that the property will be included in his SALN this year.
“Allow me to say also that it’s not the value of the property that is important. What is important is whether the actual value was concealed from the public as manifested in the statement of assets, liabilities, and net worth,” said Valte in defense of Tupas.
“Since he acquired it last year, it is to appear in his SALN… He has said already that he will be including the property in the relevant SALN for April,” she noted.
The Palace official refused to cast doubt on the capacity of Tupas to buy such property saying that the latter declared other legitimate sources of income.
“It’s not a matter of what his salary is,” she said.
The newspaper report said Tupas has a salary of some P25,000 a month as a congressman.
The lawmaker also allegedly owns a condominium unit in Tandang Sora in Quezon City.
Tupas has dismissed allegations against him as “black propaganda” and “demolition job” which he expected as consequence of being the lead prosecutor in the Senate impeachment trial of Corona.
Besides Tupas, reports also indicate that House Majority floor leader Neptali “Boyet” Gonzales also owned a P300-million house in Wack-wack Village in Mandaluyong City.
The Palace also defended Gonzales on the issue, saying the lawmaker has declared the said property in his SALN and the reported value was not true.
“The value that is being reported, in his words, is super ‘overbloated’ — that’s from Congressman Gonzales. He says that it’s declared in his SALN,” she said.
Reading a response from Gonzales, Valte said: “My daughter and I purchased a 580 square meter house and lot in 2002 as second owner after my first wife died. The value is P25-million. My daughter acquired it using part of her inheritance from her mother and I secured a loan from BPI Family which, to date, has a balance of P19-million and is appropriately reflected in my SALN.”
Valte dismissed the impression that the Palace is prompt in protecting its allies when it comes to issues on assets.
“Well, the advantage is that we can ask our allies what the truth of the issue is. In this particular instance, we were able to ask Congressman Gonzales of the allegation and he has provided us quickly with an answer,” she said.(Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
