35 families in Escalante evacuate on landslide fears

THIRTY five families in sitio Baluc, Barangay Malasibog, Escalante City evacuated from their houses because of fear of possible landslides after they noticed that the creeping land fissures in their area stretched to Barangay Paitan and are becoming bigger.
Based on the report of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, the evacuation started in January 10 with 28 families. More families evacuated on January 11.
They evacuated in Malasibog Elementary School and at the ‘Dios na Amahan’ chapel in the barangay proper.
In 2007, sitio Baluc, Barangay Malasibog was declared by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) to be a permanent danger zone but residents after evacuation then returned to go back and stayed at the place.
The latest evacuation was ordered by the Local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council of Escalante City which advised the residents to stay away from the area because of the danger posed by the fissures.
Elmer Espeja, in charge of the climate change unit of the Provincial Environment Management Office (Pemo), said that the fissures continue to creep and has become longer. They have already extended up to another barangay.
He said that along with the personnel of the Provincial Disaster Management Program Division, they are holding an actual inspection of the area on Friday. They also reported the matter to MGB which is also expected to send personnel at the area.
Aside from the fissures in Escalante City, Espeja said that they are also set to hold an inspection in an area in Moises Padilla where the same land fissures have been observed in previous years.
The local government of Escalante City has extended rice, noodles, sardines and other food assistance to the displaced families.
