Poll body eyes registration booths in airports
THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) is planning to set up registration booths in the country’s airports for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
Comelec Commissioner Armando Velasco, Committee on Overseas Absentee Voting (OAV) chairman, said the setting up of registration stands in airports would help them realize the one million registrants for OAV.
“We are setting up field registrations in our international airports and even at the Department of Foreign Affairs,” he said.
Velasco added it would be very easy for Filipinos who are working abroad to enlist themselves before they leave the country.
“Para bago lumabas naka-register na sila. Hindi na kailangan i-register dun (sa pupuntahan nila),” the poll body official said.
Velasco said the commission is coordinating with the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA) and airport authorities for the project.
The Comelec is planning to conduct the registration at the airports on January next year, as they see the opportunity since most of the vacationing OFWs return to their work abroad.
On the other hand, Velasco said this is not the first time that they will be conducting a field and mobile registration, as they have been doing this in other countries such as those in the Middle East.
“Ang target natin yung mga areas malalayo at hindi sila (OFW) nakakaalis. Kapag na identify na ang mga lugar na yan, yung embassy mismo ang pupunta para makapag-register sila,β he said.
OAV registration period started November 2, 2011 and will run until October 31, 2012.
