Church harps on Health department’s campaigns vs HIV
THE Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) subtly pushed Sunday for a similar campaign with that of the Department of Health (DOH) in a bid to increase awareness against human immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (Aids).
Speaking at the sidelines of the National Aids Sunday celebration at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila, Philippine Catholic HIV and Aids Network (PhilCHAN) bishop-advisor Bishop Broderick Pabillo said the best way to combat the spread of HIV/Aids are abstinence from sex and faithfulness to one’s partner.
“The best solution is chastity and fidelity. There is a need to educate people about chastity to avoid irresponsible sexual behaviors and at the same time fidelity to one’s spouse or family,” Pabillo, who is also the chairman of the CBCP-National Secretariat for Social Action (Nassa), said in an interview.
“That’s why our call here today is ‘stay true and be true’. Stay true to your spouse, family, and be true to the teachings of the Church, especially about the sacredness of sex,” he added.
To recall, the DOH has a similar campaign dubbed ABC, which stands for A for “abstinence from sex”; B for “be faithful to your partner”; and C for “condom use”.
The Manila auxiliary prelate, however, said they do not subscribe to the use of condom as a way to battle HIV/Aids just like they refuse to see it as essential to reproductive health.
“Hindi tayo naniniwala dun kasi kapag may condom, parang hinahayaan mo yung irresponsible activity kasi may condom naman. It has been proven worldwide na sa mga bansa na mas laganap ang condom, mas laganap ang pagkalat ng ganitong sakit,” said Pabillo.
He said the continued spread of HIV/Aids in the country is already alarming, thus needing the Catholic Church to also be involved in the drive against it.
“Ito ay panawagan din sa lahat na maging maingat and magkaroon din ng behavioral change sa mga tao kasi itong disease na ito ay dumadating dhil sa wrong sexual behaviors… magbago tayo para naman maiwasan ang sickness na ito,” said Pabillo.
Based on DOH statistics, there have been 7,884 HIV cases in the Philippines including the 937 that have developed into full-blown Aids cases since 1984. (AMN/Sunnex)
