Cases filed vs lessee, owner of lot near Oro jail

CAGAYAN DE ORO — Police authorities have filed charges against two persons allegedly involved in the illegal digging that was discovered near the Lumbia City Jail on November 15.
Police Inspector Joel Nacua, station commander of the Lumbia Police Station, said charged with violation of the National Building Code were a certain Christopher Moreno, also known as Jewateddy Alforque Alpeche, a resident of 4th Street Mega Road Heights in Tubod, Iligan City; and Consuelo Aberasturi, owner of the lot.
Nacua said they included Aberasturi in the charge sheet, being the owner of thelot.
β€œIt’s up to her (Aberasturi) to defend herself in court to clear her name,” said Nacua.
Police earlier identified Moreno, with address at Vamenta Subdivision in Barra, Opol, as the lessee of the lot, but Nacua said the name is fictitious.
He said he was able to get some documents containing Moreno’s real name, which is Jewateddy A. Alpeche.
β€œHe is a hired contractor since the Alpeches are known miners in Tubod, Iligan City,” Nacua said.
He said they are now monitoring three influential personalities believed to be the financiers of the digging.
He refused, however, to divulge their identities.
β€œWe have filed only one case first but another case will follow if Alpeche would be arrested,” Nacua added.
Last November 15, authorities discovered an 86-meter tunnel under construction near the Lumbia City Jail.
City Jail Warden Superintendent Clint Russel Tangeres said the two-meter-wide tunnel is nearly complete when it was discovered.
The starting point of the tunnel was concealed by a makeshift hut some 170 meters away from the jail located inside the lot owned by Aberasturi.
Police recovered some digging equipment in the area.
Police authorities believed the tunnel has been under construction for almost five months.
Tangeres said had the tunnel not discovered, at least 100 prisoners would have escaped from prison, including high-profile personalities.
Among those high-profile cases include two Swedish nationals who were convicted for life sentence for human trafficking, two Chinese nationals who were also convicted for life sentence for drug trafficking, a police officer accused of rape and a drug lord, among others.
