Farmers to Aquino: Accept defeat

TARLAC — President Benigno Aquino III should go over “bitter defeat and move on for the sake of social justice,” a farmers group based in Hacienda Luisita said.
“In order to get a peace of mind after years of legal entanglement with the law, Mr. Aquino and his landed clan should stop running legal maneuvers to take back Hacienda Luisita,” Rodel Mesa, Unyon ng mga Manggagawa sa Agrikultura (UMA) secretary general, said.
“The Supreme Court (SC) decided in an unprecedented 14-0 vote opting for land distribution. This is a clear signal that Aquino and his relatives should let the land go and give its full custody to its rightful owners and close the book of its long class bias to the presidents clan,” he said.
The group claimed that President Aquino will use all executive powers under his disposal to reverse the SC decision and retain his “illegal and immoral control” of the 6,453-hectare sugar estate that officially started in 1957.
“Please allow us to remind the Hacienda Luisita-based ruling gangland in Malacañang that 99 percent of the 104 million Filipinos want Luisita land to be distributed for free to farm workers of the sugar estate. Mr. Aquino and the Cojuangco-Aquino feudal aristocracy has no legal, moral and political authority to object this concern of national importance and reflective of Filipino people’s collective interest,” Mesa said.
Earlier, UMA announced the launching of Luisita Watch at the gate of SC Friday, a movement that Mesa said will ensure the correct and speedy implementation of the high court decision and will frustrate all legal and political maneuvers of the Cojuangco family to keep Hacienda Luisita.
Mesa also said, “Aquino should tell his family to concede and throw in the towel pursuing claims of Hacienda Luisita. They have been there long enough so much to enrich their clans; if there’s debt to be paid, definitely it’s not our burden.” (Reynaldo G. Navales)
