Kids vaccinated vs pneumonia

PORAC — With Central Luzon having one of the highest number of pneumonia cases in the country, Pfizer’s “PD Alliance in Motion” team trooped to this town to vaccinate 500 kids against the deadly disease.
Another 500 kids from Pandi, Bulacan also received the same treatment from local officials and Pfizer.

The “PD Alliance in Motion” campaign brings a special team of doctors, vaccine experts and motorcycle riders from Club PK to far-flung and high-risk areas in the country to protect children against pneumococcal disease (PD), the leading vaccine-preventable killer of children worldwide, and using Pfizer’s 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.

PD includes pneumonia, the number 1 cause of death in Filipino children under five years old; invasive and dangerous illnesses such as sepsis and meningitis; and non-invasive illnesses such as acute otitis media and sinusitis.
“PD is truly a dangerous and devastating disease, and this cannot be understated,” said Patricia Pascual, Pfizer’s Public Affairs director.
“It can cause paralysis, mental retardation, seizures and death, with one child dying each minute from the disease. The high number of pneumonia cases in Central Luzon is alarming, and that is why this free vaccination initiative is very important. We must protect as many children as we can from the disease,” she said.
The vaccination venues in Pandi and Porac were each packed with 500 children and their parents, along with local officials led by Mayor Enrique Roque in Pandi and Senator Lito Lapid and Mayor Carling Dela Cruz in Porac. Apart from receiving the vaccine, beneficiaries were also given important information regarding pneumococcal disease, and the best ways to combat it.
“It’s important for parents to be informed of just how dangerous this disease is, and how difficult PD is to treat,” said Dr. Maaliddin B. Biruar, product physician for Vaccines of Pfizer. “There are various strains of PD, many of which are resistant to antibiotics. This means that prevention is the best way to fight PD, and this is provided by broad-coverage vaccination.”
Dr. Biruar added that apart from the recipients of Pfizer’s vaccine, thousands more children are likewise poised to be protected from pneumococcal disease through herd immunity, a form of indirect protection wherein immunized children prevent the spread of disease to the unvaccinated.
“The 1,000 children we have vaccinated so far in the region will be able to share the gift of protection with countless others, and even more kids will benefit as we continue our campaign in the region as well as the rest of the country,” Dr. Biruar said. Pfizer is set to head to Tarlac for the next leg of its vaccination campaign.
For his part, Mayor Dela Cruz lauded executives of Pfizer and the office of Senator Lito Lapid for bringing the much-needed vaccination to Poraqueños, particularly children. (Chris Navarro)
