Opposition legislator lauds Aquino on China visit

A VOCAL critic of the administration lauded President Benigno Aquino III for the successful outcome of his yet to be concluded trip in China, and expressed hope that the development promised by both parties will fall through.
Zambales Representative Mitos Magsaysay, a member of the House opposition bloc, said it is a credit to the government that long-term partnerships, including the Philippine-China Five-Year Development for Trade and Economic Cooperation, were pushed during the five-day visit.
โAt this time of global economic instability, it is good to know that we still have the confidence of China and that they are willing to strengthen their ties with the Philippines in many aspects, especially in the aspects of trade and infrastructure,โ she said.
โI just hope that whatever commitments that both parties have made, will materialize because in paper, it all seems great. The challenge is in the implementation,โ the lawmaker added.
Magsaysay noted that one thing to watch out for is the support of China for the public-private partnership program of the government. She said that this would go a long way in creating jobs for Filipinos and help the country in reaching its development targets with the help of the private sector.
Magsaysay also hoped that both countries have agreed to restart the Northrail project, a railroad plan crafted during the administration of her ally, former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
The contract for Northrail project, which intends to connect Caloocan to Angeles City was earlier suspended due to slow progress and alleged overpricing. The contract was entered into by the government with Sinomach (formerly China National Machinery and Equipment Corporation)
โThe Philippines is a great country to invest in. We have a great pool of talented and skilled professionals and we offer a business environment that is conducive to doing trade. If and when Chinese investors decide to come to the country for trade, they will truly get their moneyโs worth. It is good that the government has opened the doors to that,โ Magsaysay further said.
However, Presidential Communications and Strategic Planning Secretary Ramon Carandang refused to comment on Magsaysay’s statements.
Aquino is set to return from his state visit on September 3.
