Typhoon Mina leaves P23M in crop damages

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Department of Agriculture (DA) reported Wednesday an initial P23,108,009 damages to vegetable crops and some P475,200 in livestock damages in Central Luzon from the onslaught of Typhoon Mina.
The DA, in its latest Damage Assessment Report, said vegetable plants like eggplant, pepper, ampalaya, okra and tomato, among others, planted in 116.18 hectares of lands in Zambales, Tarlac and Bulacan were damaged by the typhoon.
A total of 987.62 metric tons of vegetable crops were affected by flooding, with 11.65 hectares registered as partially damaged.
At present, prices of vegetables in Pampanga remain stable, though merchants here said that prices might peak if supplies are not replenished.
Corn crops in Central Luzon were also affected with P10,318,070 worth of damages, as of Wednesday.
Pampanga sustained most of the damages with P5,664,650 worth of corn crops hit, followed by Nueva Ecija with P4,511,000 and Zambales at P142,420.
Meanwhile, damages to palay crops are now at P6,628,210 from Bulacan province alone, with the DA still waiting for damage reports from different provinces.
DA-Central Luzon Regional Director Andrew Villacorta said they are still verifying other damage reports from the different municipalities and provinces in the region for the allocation of appropriate assistance to affected farmers.Published in the Sun.Star Pampanga newspaper on September 01, 2011.
