‘Mina’ makes landfall

Saturday, August 27, 2011
MANILA (Updated 8:30 a.m.) — Typhoon Mina (international codename: Nanmadol) made landfall Saturday morning and is battering towns in Cagayan province.
Graciano Yumol, Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Dost-Pagasa) undersecretary, in a radio interview said the eye wall of the typhoon was spotted at Gonzaga, Cagayan province at 5:30 a.m.
Three major bridges in Cagayan also collapsed Saturday as Typhoon Mina continues to endanger northern Luzon, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council executive director Benito Ramos said.
Pagasa said in its 5 a.m. Saturday bulletin that Mina was spotted 90 kilometer Northeast of Tuguegarao City as of 4 a.m. and moves northwest at nine kilometers per hour (kph).
Pagasa hoisted storm signal number 4 in northern Cagayan, Calayan, and Babuyan Group of Islands.
Pagasa also hoisted storm signal number 3 over Isabela, rest of Cagayan and Batanes Group of Islands.
Signal number 2 is still raised over northern Aurora, Quirino, Ifugao, Mt. Province, Kalinga and Apayao while the rest of Aurora, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija, Benguet, La Union, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte and Abra remain under signal number 1.
Pagasa also said a high pressure area, which brings good weather along its path, blocks the typhoon’s speedy exit towards Taiwan.
Mina’s interaction with another tropical cyclone (international codename: Talas), meanwhile, also forced it to move slowly at nine kilometers per hour on a northwesterly direction.
β€œAs a result, Mina will bring stormy weather to Northern Luzon this weekend while most parts of Luzon will experience moderate to heavy rains due to the enhanced southwest monsoon,” Pagasa Administrator Nathaniel Servando said in a press briefing.
Those who want to take their vacation in Baguio City are advised by Pagasa to be cautious on their plans as the weather bureau expects heavy rains there on Saturday and Sunday.
With a wide diameter of 600 kilometers, Mina is expected to produce rainfall estimated to reach anywhere between 15 to 25 millimeters per hour.
Pagasa also warned residents of areas under the public storm warning signals, as well as those in Southern Luzon and Visayas to be vigilant against possible flash floods and landslides.
No damage has been recorded so far from the torrential rains in Luzon although budget airline Cebu Pacific cancelled three roundtrip flights from Manila to these destinations: Tuguegarao, Laoag, and Caticlan.
Affected passengers will be accommodated on the next available flights or the passenger can also rebook within 30 days of cancellation, the carrier said.
Those living in coastal areas were also alerted against big waves or storm surges generated by Mina, which is expected to be 110 kilometers north northeast of Aparri, Cagayan by Saturday evening; 70 kilometers north of Basco, Batanes by Sunday evening; and 240 kilometers north of Basco by Monday evening.
