Palace: Alabang Boys drug case not a setback in drug drive

THE acquittal of two so-called “Alabang Boys” will not hamper the Aquino administrationโ€™s campaign against illegal drugs.
This assurance was given by deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte in a press briefing on Friday, saying that executive respects the decision of a court that cleared Richard Brodett and Jorge Joseph of their drug charges.
Both Brodette and Joseph are scions of prominent families in Alabang, a district in southern Metro Manila known for its upscale residential communities.
Brodett and Joseph were arrested in a buy-bust operation on September 20, 2008 by the elements of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Special Service in Ayala Alabang, Muntinlupa for possession of ecstasy, cocaine, and marijuana.
“The court has spoken. And we should see how the court arrived at the decision,” Valte said.
Judge Juanita Guerrero of Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court Branch 204 on Friday acquitted Brodett and Joseph of violating Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
In her decision, Guerrero said she found โ€œinconsistenciesโ€ in the testimony of the prosecution witness against the two accused.
PDEA Director General Dionisio Santiago, who handled the case, believed that his agency did not commit mistakes in handling the case.
President Aquino earlier vowed relentless fight against illegal drugs after three Filipinos convicted of drug trafficking in China were executed.
He stressed the need for the government to strengthen the fight against drug syndicates.
While the executive branch distanced itself from the case, Valte said they will let the Department of Justice (DOJ) handle it and see whatever action it could take.
โ€œWe will defer to the Department of Justice in whatever recourse they will decide to seek in case that they arrive at a decision after an assessment,โ€ she said.
She, meanwhile, denied that the decision of President Aquino to replace former officials in the PDEA has something to do with the case.
The Palace official explained that the term of the officials in the drug enforcement agency is co-terminus with the President.
“They serve at the pleasure of the President. It is but ordinary to replace them especially when there is new administration,” she said. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
