Aquino: Finish what Ninoy started

MANILA — President Benigno Aquino called on the nation Sunday to make sure his father’s assassination 28 years ago was not for nothing.
Aquino, speaking at the opening of an exhibit of cartoons and photographs commemorating the life of his martyred father, Benigno Aquino Jr., said the country owes it to itself to finish what the elder Aquino started.
Before the President’s speech, videos of his father’s speeches and interviews were shown on a widescreen projector.
Among the issues tackled by the late senator was the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP), which he said was overpriced. He said the contract price for the nuclear reactor at BNPP could have bought four reactors.
The President noted that decades after his father brought up anomalies in the BNPP project, the nuclear plant remains a headache for the government.
He enjoined the nation to work together to finish the fight for freedom and justice that his father was part of.
He recounted how his father had been warned that coming home to Manila would have meant his death, and how the elder Aquino flew home from the United States anyway. He said that the generation enjoying that freedom should make sure that nobody has to be assassinated in the name of democracy again.
“Together, let us finish what he started,” Aquino told the crowd at the opening of the “Ninoy, My Hero exhibit” at the SM Megamall in Pasig City.
Commissioner Jose Pardo of the People Power Commission earlier said the exhibit was meant to show “the diverse aspects of Ninoy’s life.”
He said the photographs depicted Aquino as a dedicated public servant, loving father, and devoted husband.
A collection of cartoons by the Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas, meanwhile, was meant to show the “different expressions of Ninoy as a hero.”
One of the cartoons depicted Aquino wearing different eyeglasses, including hipster aviator shades and 3-D glasses. Another asked how things would be if Ninoy had lived, and if he would have bought a Porsche like his son was criticized for last year.
Pardo said the exhibit was proof the commission’s “continuing support to keep People Power relevant.” Although Ninoy was not part of the 1986 People Power Revolution, his assassination in 1983 is believed to have helped unite opposition against the Marcos dictatorship, which fell three years later.
The President himself led the opening of the exhibit, which is part of the 28th death anniversary of the late opposition senator.
Relatives, supporters and several government officials graced the event.
Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa, who joined the President during the opening of the exhibit, asked the public to emulate the life of Ninoy.
“We honor the memory of Sen. Ninoy Aquino by doing our best to live up to the ideals and values that he exhibited when he fought for the restoration of democracy, like selflessness and love of country,” he said.
“Senator Ninoy taught us to put our country first, and we hope that everyone will commemorate his sacrifice by following his example; not just on his death anniversary, but every day,” he added.
Aside from the exhibit, President Aquino offered a private mass with his father at the Bahay Pangarap in Malacaรฑang. The mass was attended by his family and close relatives.
The First Family also went to the Manila Memorial Park in Paranaque City Sunday afternoon, where Ninoy’s remains were laid. The event was private.
Ninoy was assassinated on August 21, 1983 at the tarmac of the then Manila International Airport now called Ninoy Aquino International Airport. (Sunnex)
