Rodriguez: ‘Ninoy’s legacy lives on’

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — “The Filipino is worth dying for.” This unforgettable quote and the legacy of change and transformation of the late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. were once again echoed Sunday as the City Government of San Fernando led by Mayor Oscar Rodriguez commemorated the martyr’s 28th death anniversary.
Ninoy was shot to death at the tarmac of the then Manila International Airport on August 21, 1983. The unfortunate incident stirred up a whole nation weary of a long dictatorship and his funeral march got its spot at the Guinness Book of World Records as one of the longest, comparable to that of Mahatma Gandhi of India.
“The true legacy of my uncle is change and transformation. It was his decision to come home despite the odds — a painful choice — that made him a hero. It was his fight for democracy, isang laban para sa bayan, ang dapat nating gayahin,” said Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV who graced the rites.
Aquino IV said he was only six years old when Ninoy was shot but his desires were inscribed in his heart and mind.
“I met him only twice but his being Prisoner No. 1 of Martial Law, his dreams and desires I came to realize and embrace. The effects of his heroic deeds are so great we continue to be transformed today,” he said.
“It is a priceless legacy to all democracy-loving people,” Rodriguez for his part told Sun.Star Pampanga, “at ito ay dapat pa nating palakasin (and this we have to strengthen) and instill in the consciousness of the young. His funeral as one of the longest and well attended in history is true as I was, together with Mrs. Rodriguez, were among the first to be there. What we inherited from Ninoy is hope when there was hopelessness all around during those dark times.”
“Hindi mo talaga makakalimutan si Ninoy. Ganoon katindi ang legacy niya like the yellow ribbon during his and my detainment also. Being imprison affects your psyche. I have experienced that too. In as far as San Fernando is concerned, while I am shepherding the city, magawa ko naman ang trabaho sa mga nagsakripisyo gaya ni Ninoy. I believe what we are experiencing now and inherited is the product of the legacy and sacrifices of Ninoy,” said Rodriguez.
