Basic Trekking Pole Techniques – 11August02

Trekking poles are a great a way to help cushion the impact of trekking and hiking on the knees. Properly used poles offer support for moving over both trails and more rugged off-trail terrain. Trekking poles can also help with travel over snow. In addition, modern trekking poles collapse to a small size, making it easy to strap them to a backpack when you need your hands in steeper terrain.

Trekking poles decrease fatigue while increasing speed and stability. Using two poles can decrease weight on the legs by up to 25 pounds per step.

1. Adjusting the Poles
To set the length of the poles, bend your elbow at a 90 degree angle while standing straight and then loosen the locks on the pole. While holding the pole grip in your hand, let the pole lengthen until it’s just at about the bottom of your ankle, then lock the pole in place. Once you have one pole properly set, use it as a measuring stick to set the other pole’s length.
You want the poles to be set so that you can slip your hands through the wrist loops and use your hands on the grip comfortably while pushing down on the pole.
2. One Pole or Two?
Some trekkers like to use one pole. One pole is certainly sufficient on easier terrain, on trails and with light loads. However, when carrying larger loads or moving through uneven, steeper terrain, two poles provide more balance and more cushioning to the joints.

Technique
On level terrain, use the poles like ski poles, so that when the left leg is forward, the left pole tip is back. For uphill travel, swing one pole slightly in front of you and place it on the ground, then step up while bracing your weight against the pole. Alternate each pole placement with the upward movement of each leg. For downhill travel, reverse the technique. It can help to lengthen the poles slightly to assist in stepping down more. Sometimes, if you have a heavy load on steep terrain, or if you need to jump, planting both poles can help assist and cushion the knees more.
Check the pole length every so often, perhaps every hour or two, while hiking to make sure that the pole hasn’t collapsed any and reduced its effectiveness.
