San Fernando conducts ‘believable’ fire drill -11Aug01
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – A loud alarm shattered the quiet and peaceful city hall on Friday when a “fire” broke out at the halls second floor.
Three fire trucks followed by ambulances came a few minutes later.
City hall employees moved out of the building to a safer area while bystanders were marshaled by members of the Oplan Habitat.
Responding firemen put out the fire and one by one, rescued fire victims who suffered minor to major burns.
Victims were immediately treated by city health officers while some who had major burns were transferred to the nearest hospital.
After 20 minutes, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) declared a “fire out”.
“That seemed real,” Councilor Reden Halili, who sponsored the city’s fire ordinance, said.
The situations mentioned were part of a fire drill conducted by the City Government in observance of Fire Prevention Month.
Mayor Oscar Rodriguez said the fire drill serves as training to city officials and their partner-agencies in handling disaster situations like fire.
However, Rodriguez said there are still rooms for improvement like the use of other city equipment.
“Twenty minutes to manage the situation is a good start for preparing the city and the residents in case a disaster occurs. We do have a high-rise fire truck but I didn’t see it. So, I think there’s more to improve,” Rodriguez said.
Moreover, chief of staff Rowee Freeman said they can also improve their evacuation area which could be somewhere farther than the city hall.
Meanwhile, Captain Robles from the BFP said the city should also put up a command post where all orders and information regarding casualties can be asked.
Robles also suggested a shorter time of managing the situation.
