Mayor to preserve chapel ruins despite ‘private property’ sign -11Aug01
BACOLOR — Mayor Jose Maria Hizon on Sunday said he will push for the preservation of the San Jose Chapel ruins in Barangay Cabalantian here and set a commemorative marker in its remembrance.
Hizon said this after Archbishop Paciano Aniceto gave him the go signal to lead in the preservation of the ruins for its religious significance and relevance in the community.
“We are going to push through with the preservation. As far as we are concerned the chapel is the property of the archdiocese and the people of Bacolor,” Hizon said, adding that plans are now set for the design of the commemorative marker and how the current structure would be preserved both for its religious and social significance.
It could be recalled that residents here have criticized the appearance of a sign declaring the place as a “private property”. No one has claimed responsibility for the appearance of the streamer.
San Guillermo parish priest Jess Manabat told Sun.Star Pampanga that the parish is not against the plan of the municipal government here.
Manabat told Sun.Star Pampanga that it is also the intention of the parish to maintain the ruins and preserve the current structure for posterity.
Manabat added that they welcome the move of the municipal government to put a memorial marker in the vicinity of the said chapel.
Hizon said preserving the chapel ruins will remind the people of Bacolor of the lesson learned from the Cabalantian Tragedy of 1995.
In October 1, 1995, Typhoon “Mameng” ravaged Central Luzon and as strong rains battered the area, the Gugu Dike breached.
This happened four years after Mt. Pinatubo erupted on June 15, 1991. The breached dike released thick volcanic debris of rocks, pumice stones, ash, mud and sand onto the village.
The lahar flows that reached Cabalantian were as high as 20 feet and it was estimated that about 100 persons died or disappeared in the tragedy. Some of the 40, 000 residents were displaced.
Hizon said he hopes to remind the next generation of residents here of the resiliency and strength of the Kapampangan spirit despite adversity.
