Estrada calls on poll fraud witnesses to come out – 11Aug01

FORMER president Joseph Estrada called on people who have knowledge on the alleged cheating in the 2004 elections to speak out now for the sake of the country.
Estrada, who earlier called for the prosecution of the mastermind behind the electoral fraud, said it is common knowledge that his successor, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (GMA) was โ€œnever a legitimate presidentโ€ and that it was his longtime friend, actor Fernando Poe Jr. (FPJ), who won the 2004 polls.
But he said that while Arroyo was the president, efforts to uncover the alleged irregularities did not prosper but with a new administration, justice will be served.
โ€œThe problem was that there was a grand conspiracy to suppress the truth during the Arroyo administration. But you need not worry this time. Malapit na nating makamit ang katotohanan. Kaya kung nagtatago kayo noon dahil takot kayo sa korap na gobyerno ni Ginang Arroyo, huwag na kayong matakot ngayon dahil ang kasalukuyang administrasyon naman ay para sa katotohanan lamang (We are near to the truth now. If you are in hiding before because you are afraid of the corrupt government of Mrs. Arroyo, you now fear no more because the new administration is only after the truth),โ€ Estrada added.
โ€œI therefore urge all of you, whether you were with the military, the police, even civilians,โ€ Estrada said, adding, โ€œto all, come out and share the information that you have on the 2004 poll fraud for the sake of our country.โ€
He said that only a proper closure to the nagging controversy when justice was served and the guilty punished that the country can moved on.
“I hope that not only FPJ but the Filipino people will finally be vindicated, if only to correct history. We owe the truth not only to the millions of Filipinos whose will was suppressed but also the future generations,โ€ he said.
Estradaโ€™s appeal came as new witnesses have surfaced disclosing their knowledge on the alleged cheating in the 2004 election, which saw Arroyo won over Poe by a slim margin.
Senior Superintendent Rafael Santiago and five of his men, all active members of the Police Special Action Force, have confessed to their involvement in the switching of election returns (ERs) at the House of Representatives building on January 2005.
Suspended Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) Zaldy Ampatuan also pointed to Arroyo and her husband, Jose Miguel Arroyo, as the masterminds in previous electoral fraud, particularly the 2007 midterm polls.
Ampatuanโ€™s account was corroborated by former Maguindanao election supervisor Lintang Bedol who came out after nearly four years in hiding. (AH/Sunnex)
