Arroyo still in hospital
MANILA (Updated 9:11 a.m.) — Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo remains confined at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City where she was brought for a still unspecified reason Monday.
Arroyo, now a member of the House of Representatives, was taken to the hospital late Monday afternoon few minutes after her successor, President Benigno Aquino III, delivered his second State of the Nation Address (Sona) before Congress at the Batasan complex in Quezon City.
“Yes she was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital past five in the afternoon. I just learned it when I am monitoring her location after her visit in Pampanga,” Arroyo’s spokesperson Maite Defensor said in a text message.
Arroyo attended Monday’s opening of the House session but left for her hometown Pampanga hours before Aquino delivered his Sona.
Arroyo’s camp earlier said that the lawmaker would not attend Aquino’s Sona. It was the second time the lawmaker snubbed such major political event. In July 2010, she accompanied her husband in Hong Kong for a medical checkup in time for Aquino’s first Sona.
Her two sons and a bother-in-law who are also House members also skipped Monday’s Sona.
Among the personalities spotted at the hospital on Monday night were Arroyo’s spokespersons Raul Lambino and Defensor, former Local Water Utilities Administration chairman of the board Prospero Pichay and Candaba town Mayor Jerry Pelayo.
Lambino said Arroyo just needed rest but failed to give additional details on the lawmaker’s medical condition.
Arroyo underwent physical therapy last month for cervical radiculopathy — a pinched root of nerve due to disc disease. The lawmaker appeared in several events wearing a neck brace after that hospital confinement.
Negros Occidental Representative Ignacio “Iggy” Arroyo, the former President’s brother-in-law, said the Pampanga lawmaker may have suffered hypertension after a series of activities in Porac town, Pampanga.
The former President appeared well in several television footages taken during the day on Monday. She even gamely joked at some reporters who covered her in her nine-year stint in MalacaΓ±ang.
President Aquino has been under intense pressure to have his predecessor prosecuted for alleged plunder.
Also on Monday, Akbayan party-list group disclosed that it will file charges against the former President for malversation of public funds, and violations to the plunder law and the Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.
The case is linked to the alleged misuse of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office’s (PCSO) intelligence funds during the Arroyo administration. Funds in question entail P75 million in 2008, P90 million in 2009 and P150 million in 2010.
The group said it is questionable that the intelligence funds of PCSO are notably higher than the intelligence funds of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
The charges will be filed before the Office of the Ombudsman by former military Danilo Lim and anti-corruption advocate Jimmy Regalario. Former special prosecutor Dennis Villa-Ignacio also took part in the preparations of the plunder case.
The group called on Arroyo to take her leave of absence while her case is ongoing.
“As more and more anomalies involving Arroyo and the former First Family surface, it is but prudent for Arroyo to take a leave of absence and save the 15th Congress the shame of having an alleged criminal in the halls of the legislature,” Akbayan party-list Representative Walden Bello said.
