Dashing ladies at Sona 2011

BRIGHT-colored ternos and Maria Claras dominated ladies’ attire during the recent State of the Nation Address (Sona) of President Benigno Aquino III on Monday afternoon.
Held at House of Representatives in Quezon City, senators, congresswomen, invited guests and wives of lawmakers made sure they were dressed to the nines for this special event.
Senator Pia Cayetano wowed everyone with her silver-grey modern Filipiniana highlighted with a red and blue panuelo (off-shoulder).
The gown was created by Manila-based designer Mia Urquico, who has been working with the senator for her Sona dresses since 2004.
Urquico told Sun.Star that it took her two weeks to finish the design.
“Since the occasion always calls for the Filipiniana, we try to adhere to that basic look, but I always took into consideration what she stands for, her personality plus keeping with what’s fashionable,” Urquico said in an interview.
“Blue and red, colors of our Philippine flag and it is based on her patriotism and at the same time she’s very fond of sports so I made sure that it will echo on her look.”
Urquico, who has been in the fashion industry since 1998, also designed the red and black terno worn by Gertie Batocabe.
Yellow Filipinianas were still very much present in the occasion as Pangasinan Representative Gina de Venecia, congressional spouses Maitet Coliantes and Marjorie Jalosjos used the hue.
Paul Cabral created De Venecia and Coliantes’ gowns while Jalosjos was dressed in Edward Tan.
Deputy Speaker Raul Daza’s wife, Tessie, wore a Malou Leono creation. She also had her nails painted in orange lacquer with yellow peace sign.
According to Daza, her gown is one of a kind as it is made of pure Indian silk.
Taguig second district first lady Kaye Tinga went to Sona 2011 in a Pepito Albert Maria Clara, while Ormoc, Leyte Representative Lucy Torres-Gomez wore a light pink Randy Ortiz gown with floral details.
Cebu City Congresswoman Rachel Marguerite “Cutie” Del Mar also wore a Ortiz creation, a white Terno with black pattern, and paired it with a P300 clutch she bought in Cebu.
Aminah, daughter of Lanao Del Norte first district Representative Imelda Dimaporo, attended the event wearing a Puey Quinones pink gown. While vice-presidential daughter Abigail Binay chose a light pink terno created by Ivarluski Aseron.
Patricia Singson, Ilocos Sur representative Ryan Luis Singson’s wife, was dashing in white terno layered in organza and chiffon fabrics. It was created by Paul Cabral, who is also behind Michelle Antonio’s off-shoulder pale peach terno with beaded crystals.
Sarangani first lady Jinkee Pacquaio paired her Martin Bautista pink gown with coveted Christian Louboutin shoes.
Other ladies who shined during the annual state address were Yanie Nunez in Patricia Santos, Stella Quimbo in Jun Escario, Shiela Israel in Dressee, Marjorie Jalosjos in Agnes Munoz, and Joy Belmonte in Carina Villaluz.
Though the President’s report may receive mixed reviews from the public, one thing is for sure — when it comes to fashion, the attendees will never disappoint. (Sunnex)
