Pampanga River waste reduced
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Fourth district Board Member Nestor Tolentino recently revealed that volume of domestic garbage dump in Pampanga River has been reduced by 80 percent.
Tolentino, chair of the Provincial Board (PB) committee on environment, attributed this success to effective information drive launched by the Provincial Government relating to the implementation of Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
“Sumusunod na karamihan sa ating mga kababayan lalu yung mga nakatira sa gilid ng Pampanga River. Kaunti na kasi ang dami ng basurang nakikita natin kumpara ng magsimula tayo,” he said.
The board member also recognized the role of media in information dissemination campaign.
He said media has been an active partner of the Provincial Government, particularly in the crusade against dumping of garbage in major river system in the province.
Tolentino said the problem now is not much with the residents living adjacent to Pampanga River but with the neighboring towns upstream who indiscriminately dump garbage into the river.
“We just got big portion of this garbage with our neighbors. Yung nanggagaling sa Nueva Ecija, Aurora pati sa Tarlac madami din sumasama sa agos ng tubig na siya naman bumabara sa ating major waterways,” he added.
However, he admitted that the problem on garbage is still far from being resolved.
“Long way to go, a lot of things to do on this garbage issue. What is important now is that our people are having their share on environment conservation,” Tolentino said. (Herbert P. Mapiles)
