Disease outbreak may take place in Cotabato

Thursday, June 23, 2011
AN OUTBREAK of various diseases may erupt in Cotabato City and nearby areas after a flood submerged the region, prompting many residents to flee to evacuation centers.

This was among the apprehensions expressed by a Department of Health (DOH) official on Thursday, citing the people’s vulnerability to different viruses outside their homes.

“Imagine they will have problems on the sanitation of the area, of the drinking water, and of comfort rooms,” DOH-National Epidemiology Center (NEC) head Dr. Eric Tayag said in a press briefing.

A large number of fever, acute respiratory infection, and diarrhea have already been reported, Tayag said, citing the latest report of Cotabato City Health Officer Dr. Marlow Ninal.

The report added that from June 7 to 20, the city health office received 189 cases of fever, with 72, aged five years old or less; 143 cases of acute respiratory infection, with 64 less than five; and 101 incidents of diarrhea, with 67 less than five.

Four cases of death were also recorded, with two due to drowning and two others by diarrhea resulting in severe dehydration.

These cases should prompt local government officials to do everything to bring residents’ lives back to normal, said Tayag, who is also an assistant secretary at the DOH.

“It’s better if they can return to their homes soon… as long as they are in the evacuation centers, they are vulnerable to diseases,” said Tayag.

At least 27,730 flood victims have flocked to the several evacuation centers in Cotabato city.

Heavy rains have brought massive flooding, which was complicated by the buildup of water hyacinths at the Rio Grande de Mindanao River. (AMN/Sunnex)
