Aquino approval rating falls

Popularity least of my concerns–President
By Jovee Marie N. Dela Cruz,Reporter
A few days before he marked his first year in office, President Benigno Aquino 3rd’s net satisfaction rating had dropped to “good” from “very good,” the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey revealed on Tuesday.
The survey results, which were first published in BusinessWorld, showed that President Aquino’s satisfaction rating of “very good” at +51 (69 percent satisfied, 18 percent dissatisfied) in March skidded to “good” at +46 (64 percent satisfied, 18 percent dissatisfied) in June.
Reacting to the latest statistics, President Aquino said that he has more pressing things to do than be concerned about the dwindling satisfaction of the people with his administration.
“Well, normally there is three-percent margin of error. One can argue that it is within the margin of error. [But] I am not really that concerned with popularity, it will go up and down,” the President added.
He said that his scheduled visit to flooded Cotabato City in southern Mindanao on Wednesday is of greater importance, considering that many families were still housed in evacuation centers.
“I want to address the concerns of the people there personally because this has been addressed by so many departments since last week. What is more important to us is that at the end of the day, pwede na naming harapin kahit sino at masabing nagtatrabaho kami at hindi naghahabulan ng pampapogi (we can face anybody and say that we are working and not after popularity),” Mr. Aquino added.
The reasons for the slide were not given but Leo Larosa, an SWS researcher, said that respondents in earlier surveys were dismayed by rising inflation and perceptions of slow progress in the justice system.
In a November 2010 survey conducted by SWS, the President got the best score of a “very good” +64 percent.
SWS noted in its latest survey that Mr. Aquino’s ratings in various geographic areas and socio-economic classes were recorded at “very good” and “good.”
The pollster said that in Metro Manila and Balance Luzon (Luzon without Metro Manila), the President was rated “good” at his job while in the Visayas and Mindanao, he was found to be “very good.”
It added that in Metro Manila, Mr. Aquino’s rating was a “good” +43 (62 percent satisfied, 19 percent dissatisfied), compared to a “good” +41 (62 percent satisfied, 21 percent dissatisfied) previously.
In Balance Luzon, a “good” +41 (60 percent satisfied, 19 percent dissatisfied), lower than the “good” +48 (68 percent satisfied, 20 percent dissatisfied) in March, was recorded.
In the Visayas, the President’s remained “very good” at +51 (67 percent satisfied, 17 percent dissatisfied, correctly rounded), although this score was lower than the +60 (75 percent satisfied, 15 percent dissatisfied) posted in March.
A “very good” score of +54 (71 percent satisfied, 17 percent dissatisfied) was noted in Mindanao, slightly changing from +53 (69 percent satisfied, 16 percent dissatisfied) previously, SWS said.
In rural areas, according to the survey results, the net satisfaction rating of the President dropped by eight points to the “good” +47 (65 percent satisfied, 18 percent dissatisfied) from “very good” +55 (71 percent satisfied, 16 percent dissatisfied) in March.
In urban areas, the rating remained a “good” +45 (63 percent satisfied, 18 percent dissatisfied) although it was down by two points from the +47 (66 percent satisfied, 20 percent dissatisfied, correctly rounded) in March.
The survey also showed that Mr. Aquino’s rating in Class ABC was up by nine points to a “very good” +58 (74 percent satisfied, 16 percent dissatisfied) from the “good” +49 (67 percent satisfied, 19 percent dissatisfied).
But it showed a seven-point slide in Class D or masa (masses)—to a “good” +44 (63 percent satisfied, 19 percent dissatisfied) from a “very good” +51 (69 percent satisfied, 18 percent dissatisfied) in March.
The President’s satisfaction rating also fell by two points in Class E to a “good” +48 (66 percent satisfied, 18 percent dissatisfied) from a “very good” +50 (67 percent satisfied, 17 percent dissatisfied).
The SWS classifies net scores of +70 and above as “excellent;” +50 to +69, “very good;” +30 to +49, “good;” +10 to +29, “moderate;” +9 to -9, “neutral;” -10 to -29, “poor;” -30 to -49, “bad;” -50 to -69, “very bad;” and -70 and below, “execrable.”
Its latest survey, which was conducted on June 3 to 6, 2011, used face-to-face interviews of 1,200 adults in Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao and had margins of error of plus or minus 3 percent for national percentages and plus or minus 6 percent for area percentages.
SWS said that its latest poll was non-commissioned items and conducted at SWS’ own initiative.
