FIRST, there was a mushroom cloud. It was a sight to behold, but it was as deadly as it was beautiful.
Then, Pampanga was transformed into a world that was gray, drearyโฆ dark, even.
And that was only the start.
People panicked. People lost their homes. People abandoned their homes.
The government supplied relief goods and whatever its people needed. A can of sardines was the “bida” in every table. Noodles, too.
There was ashfall, which turned everything gray. Trees, cars, homes were covered in white. But snow it was not.
Then lahar, rocks, volcanic debris. Abandoned homes were lost, never to be seen again. Buried forever.
Pampangaโs topography changed.
During this devastating time in the lives of Kapampangans, they lost loved ones and friends. A lot of people lost lives.
Those who were steadfast crossed river channels on foot. Roads were impassable. Cars were hauled using 10-wheeler trucks. People from all walks of life made use of makeshift stairs. Roads were either dusty or muddy but they paid no heed.
Twenty years after, these are no more.
Resilient that Kapampangans are, they survived the tragedy. Now, they are being rewarded for their hardships. They have recovered beautifully.
Twenty years after, Pampanga still stands.
