CITY OF SAN FERNANDO β News reports about alleged Pampanga Provincial Government’s declaration of June 15, the day Mt. Pinatubo erupted, as a holiday has led some local banks to declare a non-banking day in the province.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the volcano’s eruption.
A bank official who requested anonymity told Sun.Star Pampanga that the bank’s decision was based on internet clipping and a report from a national broadsheet, which stated that the Provincial Government of Pampanga has “formally declared” June 15 of this year as a special non-working holiday in the province.
Pampanga Governor Lilia Pineda, however, denied issuing such declaration.
Except for Angeles City, whose local legislative body passed an ordinance declaring a special holiday in the city, June 15 will be a normal working day for the rest of the cities and municipalities in the province.
San Fernando City Administrator Ferdinand Caylao said the City Government will not declare June 15 a holiday until MalacaΓ±ang tells it so.
Meanwhile, a source from the local banking group said the group will convene its members and board of directors to discuss their non-banking day declaration.
The House of Representatives committee on revision of laws has earlier approved House Bill (HB) 3948, a measure that seeks to declare June 15 as Mount Pinatubo Memorial Day and a special non-working holiday for Pampanga and Angeles City.
However, Provincial Administrator Andres Pangilinan Jr. said HB 3948, which was filed by Pampanga Rep. Aurelio Gonzales Jr., would remain as a proposal until it is approved by Congress.
