Artists group honors actor-director

ANGELES CITY — Multi-awarded actor and director Tony Mabesa was recently bestowed the Natatanging Gawad Buhay Award by the Philippine Legitimate Artists Group Inc. (Philstage) at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
Mabesa, founder of the Dulaang UP and currently resident director of the Angeles University Foundation (AUF) Repertory Theater, was cited in recognition of his exemplary contributions to theater, having produced landmark plays and having developed artists who are now stalwarts of contemporary Philippine Theater.

Considered a lion in local theater, Mabesa has over five decades of prolific artwork. He completed his MA in Theater Arts from the University of California in Los Angeles and pursued his doctoral degree in Asian Drama and Theater at the University of Hawaii.
He also completed graduate studies in Dramatic Literature at the University of Minnesota; Special Education at the University of Delaware; and Community Development at the Indiana University and Cornell University.
Mabesa was responsible for spearheading the curricular development of the Theater Arts Education Program in both graduate and undergraduate programs at UP Diliman, a pioneering formal theater training institution in the country.
Other artists who were honored during the event include Ryan Cayabyab, Tony Espejo and Liza Macuja-Elizalde.
