ANGELES CITY — A renowned and respected historian here will be launching on June 10 a one-man exhibit featuring paintings of soldiers wearing their combat uniforms during wars in the Philippine soil.
Dubbed “Libertad! The Art of Daniel Dizon,” the event is “a rare exhibit of historical paintings which depict combat uniforms” of soldiers during the Filipino revolt against the Spanish Government.

The art exhibit also includes paintings of Katipuneros, Hukbalahaps, Filipino, American, and Japanese troops during World War 1 and 2.
Dizon’s daughter, Maya D. Nunag, said most of the paintings, which will be exhibited at the Maharajah Hotel along Don Juico Avenue in Angeles City, are in watercolor while some were also painted using pen and ink and oil on canvass.
Dizon’s inborn artistic talent was nurtured very early by his father, the late Professor Vicente Alvarez Dizon, BFA, 1928, BFA, Yale, 1936, starting when he was four years old.
His dad’s influence on the growing boy was such that he was always welcome to hang around his father’s art studio during painting sessions.
Dan recalls that the “fire” of his artistic patriotism was ignited in 1934 at the age of four. His father almost simultaneously completed two artistic projects in his home studio in Varmint St. Malate, Manila – a large oil painting dubbed β€œThe Battle of Zapote Bridge (1896)” and the 39 colorful watercolor paintings – β€œThe Evolution of the Filipino Costumes (1500 to 1934).”
This was further enhanced in 1936 when the elder Dizon completed his art degree at the Yale University with flying colors.
In 1938, Dan was struck again by another giant oil painting of his dad entitled β€œThe Battle of Tirad Pass (1899)” that rendered the eight-year-old boy in a patriotic trance for several days.
