All textbooks ‘now error-free’

Thursday, June 2, 2011

AN OFFICIAL of the Department of Education (DepEd) in Davao Region assured Dabawenyos that today’s public school textbooks are free from errors and have already undergone several revisions.
The assurance is in contrast to an admission made by no less than DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro last April that having error-free textbooks is impossible.

But Dr. Susana Estigoy, DepEd-Davao chief, said the issue on some erroneous textbooks was addressed several years ago and all books for public and private schools have been reviewed.
Estigoy said regional offices of DepEd have no control over the types of books or their suppliers since only the central office are allowed to purchase textbooks that will be distributed across the country.

She said in order to have an ample time to review all the books before it will be ready for distribution, a team of books evaluators will examine all the content of the books a year before every school year.
Dr. Luzminda O. Onor, regional textbook evaluation coordinator, told Sun.Star Davao that the government has been very critical on every book that will be used since it is crucial to the entire learning process.

“Matagal nang wala ‘yung mga libro na merong mga errors (Those book containing errors in their content have already been gone long ago),” Onor said.
For several years, DepEd has been criticized for publishing some textbooks containing erroneous facts.
Every year, before DepEd will distribute textbooks to all public schools across the country, a team of experts, teachers and other professionals will evaluate not only the content of each books but on how effective they will be in the entire learning process.

DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro earlier said that the so-called “error free” textbooks are impossible.
He said since errors are normally part of life, the same cannot be avoided even on public school textbooks.
But in defense, Onor said Luistro might be referring to the technical errors that might occur, which are sometimes unavoidable such as errors in spelling and other topographical errors, and not on the content of the textbooks.

Onor said it is possible to come up with “error free” textbooks in terms of its content and the things that the book intends to teach to the students. (JOP)
